Systems biology is an emerging field that tries to explain complete biological systems, cells, organs, organisms. The explanatory power of systems biology lies in its ability to express quantitatively and qualitatively biological phenomena and predict system behavior and emergent properties.
Gastrin is a hormone, mainly produced by G-cells in response to food, and is constantly under feedback regulation. Gastrin activates and stimulates processes in the stomach and gut, including growth of speci¿c cells in these tissues. Wrong regulation of Gastrin can result for example in cancer tumours. The study of processes involved Gastrin can assist in a solution for many cancer types.
Project description:
Develop dynamical model and analyze it in order to improve the understanding basic gastrin responses and of complex mechanisms involved. The PhD candidate will focus on building of mathematical models that capture essential components, interactions, patterns and principles of gastrin biology including its role in tumorigenesis. The candidate will analyze the model and apply methods, such as model reduction, sensitivity, bifurcation and stability analysis in order to simplify the model and derive important properties. The candidate will be working in a highly multidisciplinary team covering all areas of the necessary skill base (modelling, physics,biotechnology and madicine).
Knowledge is required in Modelling, differential equations and dynamical system (cybernetics, mathematics or control engineering). The Systems Biology group will provide the necessary training in order to acquire the biological and physiological knowledge.
The project has close collaborations with experimentalists from the gastrin systems biology group at the Department of Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine. The candidate will be steered by both biologists and systems biologists, ensuring that the project will be focused to pertinent and important biological questions relevant for gastrin biology and fundamental concepts of systems biology will form the core of the project.The PhD student will collaborate closely with a PhD student who will develop the knowledge base covering Gastrin response pathways.
