Published on Mar 09 2009 // Asia, Doctoral, Europe, Germany, India

The First Indo-German International Graduate School on Molecular and Cellular Glyco-Sciences – MCGS has launched its first call for applications for doctoral studies beginning in October 2009. Highly motivated students of all nationalities with a strong background in natural or life sciences can apply for a fellowship to pursue a demanding research project of their own design, aiming at elucidating structure/function relationships of glyco- or glyco-interacting structures and their role in e.g. cell-cell communication, human or plant disease progress or protection, etc., in selected top quality research groups at Universities and Research Centres in Münster, Germany, and Hyderabad, India.

Schedule

MCGS will start operating in October 2009, and a new generation of PhD students will be admitted every 18 months. Deadline for applications will be ca. four to five months earlier. Thus, the next deadline for applications is April 15th, 2009.

How to Apply

Due to the different organisations of PhD studies in Germany and India, different application procedures apply for both MCGS sides. If you wish to pursue your doctoral studies in Münster or Hyderabad, please fill in the respective Expression of Interest (EoI) form and submit electronic copies of the following documents prior to the next deadline (all documents must be in English or German/Hindi/Telugu, as appropriate):

  1. Expression of Interest (EoI) form
  2. Motivation letter
  3. Curriculum vitae / résumé
  4. Official transcript / record of study and certificates
  5. Two recommendation letters
  6. Proof of proficiency in English
  7. Submission
Please send the signed EoI together with electronic copies of all documents to mcgs@uni-muenster.de or mcgs@uohyd.ernet.in, resp.

Fellowships

On the German side, MCGS will have eight fellowships to distribute for the first generation of PhD students, but students with their own funding / fellowship are also encouraged to apply. MCGS fellowships amount to ca. 1350 Euro per month (tax free) and do not include health or social security insurance. In addition, MCGS will supply funds for the exchange period in India as well as for participation at the MCGS study program, including active participation at national and international conferences, etc. Funds allowing, this support will be made available to all MCGS students, whether supported by a MCGS fellowship or otherwise. No bench fees and no tuition fees („Studiengebühren“) will be charged to PhD students, but you will have to pay ca. 140 Euro per semester for the student union („Semesterbeitrag“) half of which pays for a ticket giving free access to buses and local trains („Semesterticket“).

On the Indian side, we likewise expect to accept eight to twelve PhD students having a Senior Research Fellowship as members of MCGS. We are in the process of securing additional financial support for these students to participate at the full MCGS study program.
